Manavgat Turkish Bath

  Last Updated: July 13, 2024

It would be a shame for you to visit Turkey and not sample one of its most famous experiences. If you say the name Turkish Bath anywhere in the world, it conjures up images of marble walls and domed ceilings, with steam rising from the central marble stone. If this sounds exotic enough for you, why not come along and try it out for yourself?

The system has remained unchanged for centuries and, before every house had a bathroom, villagers and townspeople alike would go regularly to the baths, to get clean and socialise together, women in one Hamam and men in the other. Today, for tourist purposes men and women, whole families, use the same Hamam, where swimwear is worn beneath the robe as a gesture of modesty. Other than this, step back in time to the Ottoman Empire and the Turkish Bath.

The routine has changed little over the centuries and has comfortably become part of the Turkish culture. In every city you will see a Hamam often from antiquity, still in use today. Today most Turkish citizens have bathing facilities in their home, but still return frequently for the benefits of the heat and massage of the authentic Turkish Bath. Find out for yourself why.

Manavgat Turkish Bath Program

To begin with the utmost relaxation, you will be picked up from your hotel, in a comfortable transfer vehicle, and taken to the Hamam. Here you will be greeted by the reception staff, given a locker key, robe and slippers and allowed to change, in private. You may leave any valuables you have with you, along with your clothes in the locker.

When you are ready you will be taken to the Sauna or Steam Room. This is essentially the first stage of your Hamam and is where you begin to sweat out the body’s toxins in preparation for the next stage. This usually takes around 15 minutes.

From the Sauna you are then led to the main chamber of the Hamam. This is the authentic marbled room. You may wait alongside the main stone until it is your turn. If you become too hot, there are basins intermittently placed along the outside wall with bowls for you to use the cooling tap water.

When it is your turn on the belly stone your massage will begin with the salt scrub. This is an exfoliating massage removing all the dead skin, made easier by the opening of the pores in the sauna. All dead skin is then rinsed away, leaving you feeling invigorated and refreshed.

Your next stage begins with a foam massage. Just like a magician your masseuse takes what appears to be an elongated pillowcase and a bar of soap and conjures up a multitude of feather-light foam which is used to cover your body. A brief cleansing massage and the foam is then rinsed away from your body, leaving you feeling light and extremely clean.

You are then taken to the rest area where you may relax with a face mask and massage. Here you will be offered tea or apple tea for refreshment, before being taken to your final room for the aromatic oil massage.

Your Turkish Bath experience ends on a high with a 20 – 30 minute aromatic oil massage. By this time you will understand why so many citizens of Turkey still go along to the Turkish Bath as often as they do.

When your oil massage is complete, you will gently be taken back to your locker and changing room. On arrival back at reception your transport will be called to return you to your Manavgat hotel.

Can anyone have a turkish bath?

It is not recommended for pregnant women or anyone with a known medical history of asthmatic or heart problems.

Due to the tender musculature of young children, it is not recommended for them. 12 years and over are accepted.

Do I have to be naked for a turkish bath?

No, not at all. For the sake of modesty people are asked to wear swimwear. Your masseuse may remove any straps that interfere with massage, but never your swimclothes, and always returns to original position before you leave the stone.

I have sensitive skin what if I have an allergic reaction to the soap?

If this is the case and you still wish to have a Turkish Bath (who wouldn’t) you may bring your own soap with you. We recommend that you tell the reception staff when you arrive and they will make sure that the masseuse uses your own soap for your sensitive skin.

What do I need to bring with me?

Some money for any extra expenses you may wish during the Turkish Bath, other than stated above.

Anything else I should know?

If you came with friends or family and your Hamam has finished first, you may wait in the comfortable ambience of the waiting area for the others in your group to join you, before returning to your hotel.

When is the best time to have a turkish bath?

It is in your best interests to take a Turkish Bath at the start of your holiday. With dead skin cells exfoliating naturally over a four week phase, you are simply speeding up the process and thus prolonging the life of any tanning you wish to do, during your holiday.
