Cappadocia Whirling Dervishes

  Last Updated: July 7, 2024

Cappadocia whirling dervishes ceremony is a dance from peaceful Sufi dervishes accompanied by restful music and chanting.

For an evening with a difference, the truly authentic dance of the Mevlevi Sema Ceremony awaits you in Cappadocia.  Everyone has heard of the whirling Dervishes but few have seen, or understand the story behind the dance they perform.  In the most magical and mystical way the dance builds to a crescendo.  The Dervishes dance to become closer to their God.  It would be hard not to be impressed with the atmosphere and dedication with which they perform this wondrous routine.  The ambience of the room seems to change with the dedication of their dance and it is hard not to be moved by this.

Even if you are not interested in the religious aspect of Sufism, the sight of the Dervishes enacting a dance that is over 800 years old, is impressive indeed.  As a small insight to the costumes worn, the cloak represents the grave and the tall hat worn represents the gravestone.  As the dance continues, the cloak is removed and this symbolises each dancer growing closer to God.  The Dervishes live a life of austerity, believing it brings them close to perfection and their God.  The discipline involved in becoming a Dervish could be applauded by all religions of the world.
